Charles spent most of his working life as an Engineer in the automotive and aerospace industries. Having always an interest in art, it was not until 2000 that he found time to take up painting, since then he has completed a Diploma in Art and Design at UCE Bourneville Birmingham, where he specialized in Fine Art & Printmaking.
He has since gained a BA (Hons) Painting degree with UCA London, via the Open College of Arts.
Whilst in Birmingham he regularly exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Water Orton, Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield art societies.

Since moving to Weymouth Charles has focused his work on an area of the Dorset coastline known as the ‘Jurassic coast’, a stretch of coastline between the Isle of Purbeck and Lyme Regis painting mainly in oils and acrylics.
Working from images found along the Jurassic coast, he is particularly attracted to the air of timeless isolation of the Fleet, Chesil bank and Portland, inspired by it's rugged stark grey stone buildings, its towering cliffs, abandoned quarries and rusting derrick cranes. He describes his art as atmospheric, developing his work in response to nature, striving to portray the effects of the particular light and conditions of the area.
