Visiting Venues - Talking to Artists
Published: 8th July 2009
Visiting our Artwey artists venues is a very friendly and interesting experience, especially for people who are not used to "engaging with" creative people. It is a chance to see the "Director's Cut" version of our artist's work - with a live and illustrated discussion that can help both visitor and artist understand each other better.
We artists are all very welcoming and most of us are happy to talk to visitors about ourselves and our work. Although we love selling our artworks, we are also very interested in hearing what visitors think about our activities, that feedback is very stimulating and helps to focus the creative energies!
Most visitors are afraid of voicing dislike about an artist's personal work, but negative criticism - if delivered reasonably tactfully - can help us understand other people's points of view about our work, we may disagree sometimes, but often we find out things about ourselves that we did not realise.
Comparing and contrasting different items of work is a very good way of expressing preferences and starting a dialogue which can include "less positive" feelings. It would be a sad and weird world if everyone liked everything!
Most creative people are very passionate about their work and we express ourselves using the visual media. Many of us are less experienced at talking direct to the public, we hide away in our studios and let galleries do the talking for us. But it does us no harm to meet "normal" people!
Artwey has a "mission to develop new audiences" - or in plain English we are looking for new clients and hoping to enthuse the next generation of "art lovers". That means we need to explain things to people who are less well versed in how the "art world" operates.
We are also aware that the world is changing and people's attitudes are different to their parents, as our ours. We try to move with the times, hence this website and other "tools" - but many of us also have traditional views about art and craft skills and techniques.
Most of our artists use visitors' books - to enable people to leave their contact details and comments. Please use these to record your appreciation (or otherwise!).
This website also provides facilities for visitors to make comments and also to share information with their friends. Please use these features freely to help us all understand things better, comments can be made about individual artists and venues or about Artwey or the events.
